How it is calculated
The attendance rate is the share of scheduled sessions you were present at, expressed as a percentage. The missed count is the difference.
rate = attended ÷ total × 100 and missed = total − attended
attended and total are both counts of sessions in the same unit (classes, days or lessons), and total means the sessions scheduled so far. Both must be whole numbers: a total of zero or less, a negative attended figure, an attended figure above the total, or a fractional count such as 10.5 all produce no result. The percentage is shown to 2 decimals. Excused absences count as missed unless you remove them from the total yourself, since the tool cannot tell them apart.
Worked example
A term has 52 scheduled classes so far and you attended 38. Divide: 38 ÷ 52 ≈ 0.7308. Multiply by 100 to get the rate: 73.08%. Missed classes: 52 − 38 = 14. If your institution requires 75%, you are below that line, and you would need to attend the next classes without a gap to bring the rate back up.
Common mistakes
- Using the total for the whole term instead of the classes held so far. Early in the term this makes the rate look far lower than the real current figure.
- Mixing units, for example attended in days and total in lessons. A day with several lessons is not one lesson.
- Counting excused or late arrivals the way your policy does not. Check whether a late arrival counts as present before entering numbers.
- Entering the missed days in the attended field. The first field is for sessions you were present at.
- Entering a half session such as 10.5 and expecting a result. Counts must be whole numbers, so round the half session to your policy's rule first.
About this calculator
Attendance percentage is a simple ratio, the number of sessions, classes, or days actually attended divided by the total number that were scheduled, multiplied by 100, but it carries real consequences in academic and workplace settings where a minimum attendance threshold is often a formal requirement. Many universities and secondary schools set a minimum bar, commonly around 75% to 80%, below which a student can be barred from sitting a final exam or have a course grade penalized regardless of academic performance.
Students track this figure through a term to know how many additional absences they can afford before crossing a policy threshold, and administrators and HR departments use the same calculation to monitor compliance with attendance policies, scholarship conditions, or visa requirements that hinge on maintaining a minimum enrollment attendance rate.
