Arcsine Calculator
Get the angle from its sine.
Result
How it is calculated
You enter a sine value v, a plain ratio with no unit. The tool returns the angle θ = arcsin(v), the one angle between −90° and +90° whose sine equals v. The result is computed in radians first, shown to 6 decimal places, and then converted with θdeg = θrad × 180 ÷ π and shown to 4 decimal places. A sine can never leave the range −1 to 1, so any value outside it, such as 1.2 or −2, gives no result, and so does an empty box. The edges work: v = 1 gives 90°, v = −1 gives −90° and v = 0 gives 0°. Other angles with the same sine, such as 180° − θ, are not shown.
Worked example
A ladder's top touches a wall 4 m up and the ladder is 5 m long, so the sine of its angle with the ground is 4 ÷ 5 = 0.8. Entering 0.8 gives θrad ≈ 0.927295, and converting, 0.927295 × 180 ÷ π ≈ 53.1301. The tool prints 53.1301 degrees and 0.927295 radians. A check with the 3-4-5 triangle agrees: the angle opposite the side of 4 is about 53.13°.
Common mistakes
- Entering an angle instead of a ratio. This box takes the sine value (between −1 and 1), not 30 or 45.
- Typing a percentage such as 80 for 80 %. Enter 0.8; values above 1 are rejected.
- Dividing the wrong sides. Sine is opposite ÷ hypotenuse; using adjacent ÷ hypotenuse gives the cosine, and you would need arccos instead.
- Expecting an obtuse angle. A ratio of 0.5 has two solutions in a full turn, 30° and 150°, but the tool returns only 30°; work out 180° − 30° yourself if the geometry requires it.
- Mixing up the units of the two outputs. The degrees line is 4-decimal degrees, and the radians line is the same angle in radians, so do not combine them.
About this calculator
The arcsine function (sin⁻¹) is the inverse of sine: given a ratio between −1 and 1, it returns the angle whose sine equals that ratio. Because sine repeats endlessly around the unit circle, arcsin is defined only over a restricted principal range of −90° to 90° (−π/2 to π/2 radians), so every input maps to exactly one output angle rather than infinitely many.
Arcsin shows up whenever you know a ratio of sides and need the angle that produced it — surveyors and structural engineers use it to recover an incline angle from a rise-over-hypotenuse measurement, physicists back-calculate a projectile’s launch angle from its velocity components, and game and graphics programmers use it to rotate objects to match a known direction vector. It is distinct from arccos and arctan, which solve the same kind of problem for cosine and tangent ratios and therefore return different angles for the same numeric input.
