How it is calculated
Both dates must be typed as YYYY-MM-DD with two-digit month and day, and must exist on the calendar (2026-02-30 and 2026-1-1 return no result). The tool counts the full days between them. decimal years = days ÷ 365.25, where 365.25 averages in leap years, and it is shown to two decimals. Whole years is a different measure: the number of completed anniversaries, counted on the calendar from the earlier date.
The order of the dates does not matter, since the tool always measures from the earlier date to the later one and never gives a negative result. The end date is not counted as an extra day, so the same date twice gives 0 days. Because the decimal uses an average year, it can differ slightly from whole years: from 2024-02-29 to 2025-02-28 it shows 1.00 yr of decimal years but 0 whole years, since the anniversary has not yet been reached.
Worked example
Start 2015-03-15, end 2026-10-18. Counting the calendar gives 11 full years up to 2026-03-15, which includes three leap days (2016, 2020, 2024), so 11 × 365 + 3 = 4,018 days. From 15 March to 18 October adds another 217 days. Total: 4,018 + 217 = 4,235 days. Decimal years = 4,235 ÷ 365.25 = 11.59 yr. The 11th anniversary fell on 15 March 2026 and the 12th has not arrived, so whole years = 11 yr.
Common mistakes
- Typing dates as DD/MM/YYYY or without leading zeros: only the
YYYY-MM-DDform is accepted, so2026-1-1returns no result. - Using the decimal figure for age or service milestones: 11.59 yr is based on a 365.25-day year, whereas a legal age or an anniversary uses whole years that are completed on the calendar date.
- Expecting the whole-year count to round: 11.99 decimal years still shows 11 whole years until the anniversary date itself arrives.
- Entering the dates the wrong way round and expecting a negative number: the tool returns the absolute span, so you cannot tell which date is earlier from the result.
- Expecting the end date to be included: counting both the first and last day would give one more day than shown here, so add 1 if your rule is inclusive.
About this calculator
Calculating the elapsed years between two dates sounds trivial but has real edge cases — leap years, varying month lengths, and whether the answer should be reported as a precise decimal, a whole number of completed years, or a raw day count, since different situations call for different formats.
This calculator returns all three at once: an exact decimal year figure, the number of whole years elapsed, and the total day count. It's used for legal age verification, HR tenure calculations, anniversary and milestone tracking, and any record-keeping situation where the precise amount of elapsed time actually matters.

Leap-day birthdays are the awkward case. Between 2024-02-29 and 2025-02-28 the tool shows 0 whole years, and on 2025-03-01 it shows 1, so it treats the anniversary as reached on 1 March in a non-leap year. Legal systems differ on whether a leap-day birthday counts on 28 February or 1 March, so check the rule that applies if the result matters officially. Do you use this for ages, tenure or contract terms?
