How it is calculated

The tool applies one straight-line price: shipping = base + weight × per-kg rate. Base is the fixed fee per parcel in dollars, weight is the parcel weight in kilograms (decimals such as 4.5 are fine), and per-kg rate is the dollar charge for each kilogram. The result also shows the weight charge on its own (weight × per-kg rate) next to the base. Despite the name, there are no weight brackets: the same per-kg rate applies to every kilogram, so a carrier whose price steps up at 5 kg, 10 kg or 20 kg has to be calculated one bracket at a time with that bracket's own base and rate. A weight of zero returns just the base fee; negative or empty values return no result. Pounds must be converted to kilograms first.

Worked example

A parcel weighs 4.5 kg. The carrier charges a $6 base fee plus $2.20 per kilogram. Weight charge: 4.5 × 2.2 = $9.90. Add the base fee: 6 + 9.90 = $15.90. Of that total, $6.00 is the fixed part and $9.90 is the part that grows with weight, so a 9 kg parcel under the same rates would cost 6 + 19.80 = $25.80, not twice as much.

Common mistakes

  • Typing the weight in pounds. The field is kilograms, so a 10 lb parcel should be entered as about 4.54, not 10.
  • Entering the carrier's total price for a sample parcel as the per-kg rate. That number already contains the base fee; divide out the base first or the cost will be counted twice.
  • Using one rate for a carrier with real weight bands. If the price per kg changes at 5 kg or 20 kg, a single base and rate only fits one band.
  • Forgetting that the fee is charged per kilogram of the weight you enter. Carriers often bill the larger of actual and volumetric weight, so enter whichever the carrier will use.

A tiered shipping rate structure charges a flat base fee for handling and packaging a shipment, plus a variable charge per kilogram for the actual transport. It's the pricing model used by most parcel carriers, freight brokers, and e-commerce platforms because it splits cost into a fixed component (warehouse handling, label printing, first-mile pickup) and a component that scales with how heavy — and therefore how expensive to move — the package actually is.

Sellers use this kind of calculation to price shipping into a product or checkout flow, and shoppers use it to sanity-check a quoted rate. Enter the base rate, the per-kilogram charge, and the package weight, and the calculator returns the total shipping cost, with the weight charge shown separately. It applies one per-kilogram rate to the whole weight; if your carrier uses weight brackets with different rates, work out each bracket's weight charge separately and add the results to the base rate. It is useful for comparing carriers, setting free-shipping thresholds, or estimating landed cost on heavier items before they ship.
