How it is calculated
The tool places your annual income into one of four fixed bands and charges a set share of the full fee: income under 20,000 pays 25%; 20,000 to under 40,000 pays 50%; 40,000 to under 60,000 pays 75%; 60,000 and above pays 100%. Then fee = full_fee × share and savings = full_fee − fee. The share applies to the whole fee, not slice by slice, so moving across a boundary changes the fee in one step. A band starts exactly at its lower figure: 40,000 is already in the 75% band. Both income and full fee must be above zero. These bands are this tool's own illustration; a clinic or provider publishes its own thresholds, which can differ.
Worked example
Your annual income is 45000 and the provider's full fee for a session is 150. 45000 is at least 40,000 but below 60,000, so the tier is 75%. Fee: 150 × 0.75 = $112.50. Savings: 150 − 112.50 = $37.50. The tool shows an adjusted fee of $112.50 at a 75% tier, saving $37.50 per session. Had income been 39,999, the tier would be 50% and the fee $75.00.
Common mistakes
- Entering monthly income. The bands are based on annual income, so 3,750 a month must be entered as 45000.
- Entering gross or household figures when the provider asks for something else, such as personal net income. Check which income the provider's own scale uses.
- Reading the 75% tier as a 75% discount. It means you pay 75% of the full fee and save 25%.
- Assuming the bands match your provider's scale. These are fixed example thresholds (20,000, 40,000, 60,000), not a standard.
- Expecting a gradual change near a boundary. An income of 39,999 pays 50% while 40,000 pays 75%, a large step from a tiny difference.
About this calculator
A sliding scale fee adjusts what someone pays for a service based on their ability to pay, typically their annual income, so that a fixed full fee is reduced through defined income tiers rather than charged uniformly to everyone. This calculator takes your income and full fee, matches you to the applicable tier, and shows both your adjusted rate and the dollar amount you save compared to the standard fee.
Sliding scales are common practice among therapists, counselors, legal aid clinics, nonprofit service providers and some medical clinics, who use them to keep services accessible to lower-income clients without turning away business from those who can pay full price. Organizations that publish a sliding scale often display it as a table of income bands and corresponding fees, and a calculator like this lets a prospective client quickly see where their own income places them before reaching out.
