How it is calculated

The tool splits one combined figure equally: per person = total expenses ÷ number of people. Add up all the shared costs for the period yourself (rent, utilities, internet, shared groceries) and enter that sum as the total, then enter how many people share it, counting yourself. The result is rounded to cents, so a split that does not divide evenly, such as 100 among 3, shows $33.33, and three payments of that amount are one cent short of the total. The total must be zero or more, and the number of people must be a whole number of at least 1; a fraction such as 2.5 or a zero gives no result. Everyone pays the same share; the tool does not weight by room size, income or days in the home.

Worked example

Four roommates share a month's costs: rent 1,900, electricity 180, internet 70 and groceries 200. Total: 1,900 + 180 + 70 + 200 = 2,350. Entering 2,350 and 4 people: 2,350 ÷ 4 = $587.50 each. The tool also repeats the total ($2,350.00) and the number of people (4) so you can check what was entered. If one person had paid the whole bill, the other three would each owe that person $587.50.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting to count yourself. With 3 roommates plus you the divisor is 4, not 3.
  • Entering only the rent in the total and then splitting utilities separately, which hides the full monthly cost for each person. Add everything shared into one total first.
  • Including personal expenses that only one person uses, such as one person's phone plan or a private subscription.
  • Using an equal split when rooms differ a lot in size or when someone is away for part of the month. This tool always divides evenly, so adjust the amounts yourself.
  • Typing a part-person such as 2.5 to account for a partner who stays some nights. The people count must be a whole number, so a fraction shows no result; agree a different total instead.

About this calculator

Splitting a household with roommates usually means dividing shared costs — rent, utilities, internet, groceries bought together — into equal shares so nobody overpays or underpays for the space and services everyone uses in common. The math itself is simple, but keeping every bill, every month, split fairly and transparently is where disputes usually start.

You enter the total of your shared household expenses (add the bills up first) and the number of roommates, and this calculator divides the total evenly, giving each person's fair share in one step. It's a practical tool for roommates settling a monthly bill run, for people moving into a shared apartment who want to agree on the split upfront, or for anyone who just wants a neutral number to point to instead of doing the math by hand.
