Present Value Calculator
Find what a future amount is worth today.

How it is calculated
Present value discounts a future amount back to today: PV = FV / (1 + r)t. FV is the amount you will receive, r is the discount rate per period (you type the percent and the tool divides by 100) and t is the number of periods. The tool labels t as years and accepts fractions, but the rate and the period must match: use an annual rate with years, or a monthly rate with a number of months. Negative time returns no result, and neither does a rate of −100% or below. A higher discount rate or a longer wait lowers the present value. This handles one lump sum only; a series of payments has to be discounted one by one and added up.
Worked example
You will receive 10,000 in 10 years and use a 5% discount rate. Growth factor: 1.0510 ≈ 1.628895. Present value = 10,000 / 1.628895 ≈ $6,139.13. In other words, 6,139.13 today at 5% a year grows to 10,000 after 10 years.
Common mistakes
- Entering the rate as 0.05 instead of 5.
- Mixing periods, such as an annual rate with a number of months.
- Choosing a discount rate without thinking about risk and inflation, which changes the answer a lot.
- Using this for several payments at once; each payment needs its own discounting.
- Confusing present value with future value: this tool goes from the future amount back to today.

About this calculator
This calculator applies the core time-value-of-money formula, PV = FV / (1 + r)ⁿ, to discount a future sum of money back to what it's worth today, given a discount rate (r) and number of periods (n) — the same principle behind the idea that a dollar today is worth more than a dollar in the future.
Finance students and analysts use it to value bonds, evaluate investment opportunities, and compare offers like a lump-sum settlement versus a future payout, while businesses use it in capital budgeting to decide whether a future cash flow justifies an investment made today. The result is highly sensitive to the chosen discount rate, so the calculator makes it easy to see how a small change in rate assumptions swings the present value.

One practical use is comparing offers that arrive at different times. If someone offers 6,500 today or 10,000 in ten years, discount the 10,000 at the rate you could realistically earn or pay. At 5 percent it is worth 6,139.13 today, so the immediate offer is larger at that rate, while a lower rate would flip the answer. What discount rate do you use, and why?
