ppm to Molarity Calculator
Convert ppm to molarity for a solution.
Result
How it is calculated
For a dilute water solution, 1 ppm is taken as 1 mg of solute per litre. The tool converts that to moles per litre: M = ppm ÷ (1000 × molar mass). Here ppm is in mg/L, the molar mass is in g/mol, and the factor 1000 turns milligrams into grams. The result is shown in scientific notation in mol/L and also in mmol/L (the molarity times 1000, to four decimals). The ppm value cannot be negative and the molar mass must be above zero. The shortcut 1 ppm = 1 mg/L only holds for dilute aqueous solutions near the density of water; it does not hold for concentrated or non-aqueous solutions.
Worked example
A brine contains 500 ppm of sodium chloride, whose molar mass is 58.44 g/mol. Convert 500 mg/L to grams: 0.5 g/L. Divide by the molar mass: 0.5 ÷ 58.44 = 0.0085558 mol/L. The tool shows 8.5558 × 10⁻³ mol/L, which is the same as 8.5558 mmol/L.
Common mistakes
- Using the wrong molar mass, for example the mass of the ion (Na⁺ at 22.99) when the ppm refers to the whole compound (NaCl at 58.44), or the reverse.
- Applying it to concentrated solutions. Above a few thousand ppm the density departs from 1 kg/L and the shortcut loses accuracy.
- Confusing ppm by mass with ppm by volume or ppm in air. This tool assumes mg of solute per litre of water.
- Reading the scientific notation wrongly. 8.5558 × 10⁻³ means 0.0085558, not 8.5558.
- Dropping the factor of 1000 by hand, which gives a thousand-fold error between mol/L and mmol/L.
About this calculator
This calculator converts a dilute concentration expressed in ppm (parts per million, treated as mg per litre for water-based solutions) into molarity (mol/L) using the solute's molar mass: molarity = ppm ÷ (1000 × molar mass). It works because 1 ppm in an aqueous solution is essentially 1 mg of solute per litre of solution, so dividing by the molar mass converts mass to moles.
Analytical chemists, environmental scientists, and lab technicians use this conversion constantly — water-quality standards (like EPA or WHO drinking-water limits for lead, nitrate, or chlorine) are published in ppm or mg/L, but equilibrium and titration calculations need molarity.

The conversion treats 1 ppm as 1 mg per litre, which holds for dilute water-based solutions, roughly where density is close to 1 kg/L. For a strong brine, a syrup or any non-aqueous liquid, it will drift off. You must supply the molar mass of the exact species you measured, so check whether a result is reported as the ion or as the whole salt. The answer appears in scientific notation and in mmol/L.
