PPM Concentration Calculator
Find a solution's ppm concentration.

How it is calculated
Parts per million is the fraction of solute in the whole solution, scaled up by a million: ppm = solute / solution × 1,000,000. Both amounts must be in the same unit, for example grams, so the unit cancels. The tool also shows the same fraction as a percentage, percent = solute / solution × 100, where 1 ppm is 0.0001%.
The solution is the total, solute plus solvent, not the solvent alone. It must be greater than zero, and the solute cannot be negative. The solute may be larger than the solution only by mistake, because the tool does not stop it and would show a value above 1,000,000 ppm. The calculation is a mass ratio. For dilute water solutions, 1 mg per litre is often treated as about 1 ppm, but that shortcut depends on the solution having a density close to water.
Worked example
3 g of dissolved material in 2000 g of solution. The fraction is 3 / 2000 = 0.0015. Multiply by 1,000,000: 1,500.00 ppm. As a percentage, 0.0015 × 100 = 0.1500%. A solution of 0.5 g in 1,000,000 g would show 0.50 ppm.
Common mistakes
- Using the solvent mass as the denominator. The denominator is the whole solution, solute included, though for very dilute cases the difference is tiny.
- Mixing units, such as milligrams of solute and kilograms of solution. Convert both to the same unit first, or the answer is off by a factor of a million.
- Treating mg/L as exactly ppm for any liquid. That holds only when the solution density is close to 1 kg per litre.
- Confusing ppm with percent. 1% is 10,000 ppm, so a 0.1500% result means 1,500 ppm.
- Mixing mass and volume, such as grams of solute against millilitres of solution, which is not a mass ratio.
About this calculator
Parts per million (ppm) expresses concentration as ppm = (mass of solute / mass of solution) × 10⁶, a convenient unit for very dilute solutions where percentage would require awkward decimals (1 ppm equals 0.0001%). The calculator also converts the result to a percentage for comparison, since 10,000 ppm equals 1%.
Chemists and lab technicians use ppm to report dilute solution concentrations, water treatment plants and environmental scientists use it to measure contaminants like chlorine, lead, or dissolved minerals in drinking water, and agronomists use it to calculate fertilizer or pesticide dilution rates for crop spraying. Aquarium and hydroponics hobbyists also rely on ppm readings to keep nutrient or chemical levels in a safe range for fish and plants.

The formula also works backwards when you are preparing a solution: solute needed = target ppm × solution mass ÷ 1,000,000. For 50 ppm in 2,000 g of solution that is 0.1 g. This tool only runs the forward direction, so use it to confirm the figure afterwards by entering 0.1 and 2000. Which dilution are you preparing, and in what units do you weigh the solute?
