Percent Of Calculator

Find X percent of a number.

Result

36.00

How it is calculated

The tool answers "what is X% of Y?" with result = percent ÷ 100 × value. A percentage is a fraction out of one hundred, so 15% means 15/100 = 0.15. The two numbers can be any real values: a percentage above 100 gives more than the original amount, and a negative number gives a negative result. The answer is rounded to two decimals. The same calculation covers tips, discounts, commissions or shares; to get the amount after a discount, subtract the result from the original, and to add a surcharge, add it.

Worked example

What is 15% of 240? Convert the percentage: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15. Multiply by the value: 0.15 × 240 = 36.00. So a 15% tip on a 240 bill is 36, and a 15% discount on a 240 price takes off 36, leaving 204.

Common mistakes

  • Typing 0.15 instead of 15 for the percentage: that would give 0.15% of the value.
  • Swapping the two boxes. 15% of 240 is 36, but 240% of 15 is also 36, while 15% of 24 is 3.6; check which number is the whole.
  • Treating the result as the final price after a discount. It is only the discount amount; subtract it yourself.
  • Applying two percentages one after another by adding them. 10% then 10% is 19% of the original, not 20%.

About this calculator

This calculator answers a single question that comes up constantly in everyday math: what is a given percentage of a number? It applies the basic formula (percent ÷ 100) × value — for example, 15% of 80 is (15 ÷ 100) × 80 = 12 — and returns the result instantly without needing to convert the percentage to a decimal by hand.

It gets used for figuring out a restaurant tip, checking how much sales tax will add to a purchase, calculating a commission or bonus, or working out what portion of a class actually passed a test. Teachers, salespeople, and shoppers reach for it because the calculation is simple but easy to fumble under time pressure or with unfamiliar numbers.

The result is the portion itself, not the amount left over. For a 15 percent discount on 80, the tool gives 12, and you pay 80 minus 12, which is 68. The percentage may be above 100 or negative, so 150 percent of 40 gives 60. It answers only what X percent of Y is; it does not work out what percent one number is of another. Which everyday calculation do you use it for, tips, discounts or commissions?
