Historical data from Wikipedia (CC BY-SA)
How it is calculated
The tool looks up a stored list of historical events for a calendar date. You give a month number (1 to 12) and a day number (1 to 31), and it builds the key month-day, for example 07-20. It then lists every event saved for that date as year followed by a short description, and shows how many there were. The lists are stored per language; if the chosen language has no entry for the date, the English list is used instead. If no event exists for the date, for example 31 April, no result appears. The number of events is not the same for each date or each language, and the entries come from a fixed dataset that is not updated live.
Worked example
Enter month 7 and day 20, which becomes the key 07-20. The English list for that date contains 18 events and starts with the year 1333; they are shown in year order from earliest to latest. On the Turkish page the same date shows a shorter list of 5 events, starting with 1402.
Common mistakes
- Typing the day first (20 then 7), as many countries write dates; the first box is the month, and a month of 20 returns nothing.
- Entering a month name or the year; only the month and day numbers are used.
- Trying a date that does not exist, such as 31 in a 30-day month.
- Treating the list as complete for a date; it is a selection of events, not every event that happened.
- Quoting dates in an essay without checking them in another source, as old dates are sometimes given differently across calendars.
About this calculator
This tool pulls together notable historical events — births, deaths, battles, discoveries, political milestones, and cultural moments — that fall on a specific month and day across many different years, defaulting to today's date. Each entry is tagged with its year so events centuries apart can be compared side by side on the same calendar date.
It's the same format popularized by newspaper "this day in history" columns and almanac features, drawing on the kind of chronological event data found in encyclopedias and historical timelines rather than a single narrow source.
Trivia hosts, history teachers building a daily classroom hook, journalists and bloggers looking for an angle tied to the calendar, genealogists cross-checking family dates against world events, and casual history enthusiasts use it to see what happened on a birthday, anniversary, or any date they're curious about.

If you want a fun fact for a newsletter, a class or a social post, treat the list as a menu of leads. Pick one entry, then confirm the year and wording in a second source before you publish it. Switching the page language can also change the list, because each language keeps its own set of entries. Is there a well-known event you expected to see on a date and did not?
