Non-HDL Cholesterol Calculator
Find your non-HDL (atherogenic) cholesterol in one step.

How it is calculated
Two simple operations are applied to the values from a lipid panel: non-HDL = total cholesterol − HDL and ratio = total cholesterol ÷ HDL. Both inputs are in mg/dL, and the non-HDL result is labelled mg/dL and rounded to a whole number, while the ratio has two decimals and no unit. The tool needs both values to be positive and HDL to be lower than total cholesterol; otherwise it returns nothing. It only does the arithmetic. It does not apply target ranges, age, sex or other risk factors, so the numbers need to be interpreted by a clinician who knows your history.
Worked example
A lipid panel shows total cholesterol 210 mg/dL and HDL 55 mg/dL. Non-HDL = 210 − 55 = 155 mg/dL. That remainder is the cholesterol carried by LDL, VLDL and other non-HDL particles. The total-to-HDL ratio is 210 ÷ 55 = 3.8181..., shown as 3.82.
Common mistakes
- Entering mmol/L values (such as 5.4 and 1.4) into fields that expect mg/dL. The tool treats them as mg/dL, rounds the difference to a whole number and gives a meaningless "4 mg/dL". Convert first, or use the mg/dL values on your report.
- Swapping the two boxes. If HDL is entered larger than total cholesterol, no result appears.
- Entering LDL instead of total cholesterol; non-HDL is calculated from the total, not from LDL.
- Reading the ratio as a percentage. 3.82 means total cholesterol is about 3.8 times HDL, not 3.82%.
- Using values from different blood draws or different labs and comparing them with a single target.

About this calculator
Non-HDL cholesterol is calculated simply as total cholesterol minus HDL (“good”) cholesterol, which leaves everything else that carries cholesterol through the bloodstream in a form that can contribute to plaque buildup — LDL, VLDL, and other atherogenic lipoprotein particles combined. Because it captures all of those particles in a single subtraction, some clinical guidelines treat it as a more complete marker of cardiovascular risk than LDL cholesterol alone, particularly when triglycerides are elevated (a condition where LDL estimates from the standard Friedewald formula become less reliable).
This calculator takes your total cholesterol and HDL values from a lipid panel and returns non-HDL cholesterol along with the total-to-HDL ratio, another commonly referenced risk indicator. It's a way to see two additional risk figures directly from standard lab results, though interpreting them against target ranges is something to do with a clinician who knows your full risk profile.
