Millionaire Calculator

Enter current savings, monthly contribution, and annual return to find the time to reach $1,000,000.

25.7 years

How it is calculated

The tool simulates your balance month by month until it reaches 1,000,000. The monthly rate is r = annual_return ÷ 100 ÷ 12, and each month the balance becomes balance × (1 + r) + monthly_contribution, so the contribution is added at the end of the month. The month count is divided by 12 and shown in years to one decimal. The target is fixed at 1,000,000 in the same currency you use for savings and contributions, and the return is a constant nominal annual rate with no tax, fees or inflation. The simulation stops after 1200 months; if the balance is still short, the result says it was not reached within 100 years. A negative savings, contribution or return gives no result. A balance already above one million shows 0.0 years.

Worked example

You have 25000 saved, add 1000 each month and assume 7% a year. Step 1: monthly rate = 7 ÷ 100 ÷ 12 = 0.5833%. Step 2: each month the balance grows by that rate and then 1000 is added. Step 3: the balance first passes one million (about 1,006,774) in month 308. Step 4: 308 ÷ 12 gives 25.7 years. Total paid in = 25000 + 308 × 1000 = $333,000.00, so roughly two thirds of the million comes from investment growth rather than your own money.

Common mistakes

  • Entering an optimistic return such as 10% and treating it as guaranteed. The tool applies one fixed rate every month, so a poor early market can delay the date a great deal.
  • Ignoring inflation. The target is one million nominal units, which will buy less in 25 years than today.
  • Entering the contribution as a yearly amount. The field is per month, so 12000 a year must be typed as 1000.
  • Forgetting that returns shown here are before tax and fund fees. Use a net-of-costs rate if you want a realistic date.
  • Entering zero contribution with zero or small savings and expecting a date. If one million is not reached in 1200 months, the tool simply says so.

About this calculator

This calculator projects how long it will take to reach a $1,000,000 net worth from three inputs: your current savings, a fixed monthly contribution, and an expected annual rate of return. It combines the future value of your existing lump sum, growing at the compound rate, with the future value of a regular monthly contribution stream (an ordinary annuity), and solves for the number of years at which the two combined equal one million.

Small changes compound dramatically over long horizons — increasing the monthly contribution or the assumed return by even a little can cut years off the timeline, while starting later adds them. It is a motivational and planning tool rather than a guarantee, since real markets don't return a fixed rate every year, but it gives a useful ballpark for retirement and long-term wealth planning.
