Cycling Intensity Factor (IF) Calculator
Get your ride’s Intensity Factor from power and FTP.
Result
How it is calculated
The Intensity Factor is a ratio: IF = NP ÷ FTP. NP is the normalized power of the ride in watts, usually taken from a head unit or training platform. FTP is your functional threshold power in watts, the figure you currently use for training. Both must be in the same unit, and the answer has no unit; it is shown with two decimals. An IF of 1.00 means the ride averaged threshold effort over its length. The tool accepts an NP of zero (0.00) but returns nothing for a negative NP or an FTP of zero or below. It does not compute NP itself and it does not label the ride; it divides the two numbers you give it.
Worked example
A rider with an FTP of 250 W finishes a ride with a normalized power of 215 W. Divide NP by FTP: 215 ÷ 250 = 0.86. The calculator shows an Intensity Factor of 0.86. That means the ride was ridden at 86% of threshold on average, a firm effort but below threshold. If the FTP were raised to 270 W after a test, the same ride would drop to 215 ÷ 270 = 0.80, showing how much the result depends on an up-to-date FTP.
Common mistakes
- Entering average power instead of normalized power. On a ride with surges, average power is lower than NP, so IF is understated.
- Using an outdated FTP. After a fitness gain the old, lower FTP inflates IF, and the reverse after a layoff.
- Entering power as watts per kilogram in one field and watts in the other. Both fields must be in watts.
- Typing FTP in the NP field and the other way round. The tool then returns an IF above 1 for an easy ride, which should make you check the order.

About this calculator
Intensity Factor (IF) is a core metric in Dr. Andrew Coggan's power-based training framework for cyclists, calculated by dividing a ride's Normalized Power (NP) — power adjusted for the variability of a real-world ride — by the rider's Functional Threshold Power (FTP), the highest power they can sustain for roughly an hour.
An IF near 1.0 means the ride was raced or trained right at threshold effort; below 0.75 typically indicates an easy endurance ride, while above 0.85 signals a hard tempo, threshold or race effort. Coaches and platforms like TrainingPeaks and WKO use IF alongside Training Stress Score (TSS), which is itself derived from IF, to quantify how hard and how taxing a given ride was, and to plan training load across a week or season.
