Hogsheads to Liters Converter

Enter a value and pick a direction to convert hogsheads and liters.

Result

736.47 L
245.49 L/hhd

How it is calculated

The converter uses one fixed rate, 245.4886 litres per hogshead, which is the imperial hogshead of 54 imperial gallons. Hogsheads to litres: litres = hogsheads × 245.4886, shown with two decimals. Litres to hogsheads: hogsheads = litres / 245.4886, shown with four decimals. The rate is printed under the result as 245.49 L/hhd (rounded for display only; the full figure is used in the calculation).

Direction is chosen by the selector: hogsheads to litres is the default, and an unrecognised direction value falls back to it. The tool has no US hogshead (63 US gallons, about 238.5 L) setting, so if your cask is defined that way the result will be about 3 % too high. Negative values are not rejected and simply give a negative result; zero gives zero. The exact imperial figure, 54 × 4.54609, is 245.48886 L, so the stored rate is lower by only about 0.0003 L.

Worked example

You want to know the volume of 3 imperial hogsheads in litres. Multiply by the rate: 3 × 245.4886 = 736.4658. The tool rounds to two decimals and shows 736.47 L. In the opposite direction, 500 litres divided by 245.4886 gives 2.0368 hogsheads, so a 500 L tank holds a little over two hogsheads. Both directions display the rate 245.49 L/hhd below the result.

Common mistakes

  • Choosing the wrong direction. If you type litres but leave hogsheads to litres selected, the number is multiplied by 245.49 instead of divided, giving a huge, meaningless figure.
  • Assuming a US hogshead. The tool uses the imperial 54-gallon size; an American 63 US gallon hogshead is about 238.5 L, a difference of roughly 3 %.
  • Mixing it up with a barrel or a puncheon. A hogshead is a specific size, and casks sold as barrels or butts hold different amounts, so check the cask's stated capacity before converting.
  • Using the rounded rate for hand checks on large volumes. Rounding 245.4886 to 245.49 changes 1,000 hogsheads by about 1.4 litres; use the full figure for accounting or duty calculations.
  • Expecting the actual fill volume. A cask's nominal size and the liquid that was really put in it can differ, so a converted nominal volume is not a measured quantity.

About this calculator

A hogshead is a historical cask measure still used today in the wine and spirits trade, equal to 54 imperial gallons (about 245.5 liters) in the British/Commonwealth definition, or 63 US gallons (about 238.5 liters) in the older American liquid measure — this converter uses the imperial 54-gallon definition. One imperial gallon equals exactly 4.54609 liters, so 1 hogshead = 54 × 4.54609 ≈ 245.5 liters.

The unit survives specifically in the wine, whisky and cider industries, where barrel sizes are still quoted in hogsheads for aging and shipping — Scotch whisky is very commonly matured in “hoggies” (refill hogsheads, often ex-bourbon barrels rebuilt to hogshead capacity), and cellar records, insurance valuations and bulk trade contracts in these industries still list volume in hogsheads alongside liters, making a quick, reliable converter useful for distillers, importers and beverage logistics staff working across both units.

The hogshead has meant different sizes for different goods, and this tool fixes it at the 54-gallon imperial figure. Whisky hogsheads are commonly quoted at about 250 L, close to this rate but not the same, so for cask stock records use the litres written on the cask rather than a conversion. What are you measuring, beer, wine, whisky or historical records?
