Furlong to Meter Converter

Enter a length and choose the conversion direction.

Result

1,207.0080 m

How it is calculated

The factor is fixed: 1 furlong = 201.168 m. Furlongs to metres: m = furlongs × 201.168. Metres to furlongs: furlongs = m ÷ 201.168. The direction selector decides which formula runs; any value other than the metres-to-furlongs option is treated as furlongs to metres. The answer is rounded to four decimal places. The only input needed is the number itself, which may be fractional, and a negative number is simply converted with its sign kept (the tool does not reject it). The factor comes from the furlong being one eighth of a mile, 220 yards, with the international yard of 0.9144 m, so the conversion is exact rather than approximate. Everything is a pure length, so no other units are involved.

Worked example

A horse race over 6 furlongs, converted to metres. With the direction set to furlongs to metres: 6 × 201.168 = 1,207.0080. The tool shows 1,207.0080 m. Going the other way, 1,200 m divided by 201.168 gives 5.9652 furlongs, which is why a race of 1,200 m is a little short of 6 furlongs.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving the direction on furlongs to metres when you want the reverse. Typing 1,200 and getting 241,401.6 m is a sign that the selector is on the wrong option.
  • Confusing the furlong with the mile. A furlong is an eighth of a mile, so 8 furlongs make a mile, not 1 furlong.
  • Rounding the factor to 200 m. Over a 10 furlong race that is a difference of almost 12 metres.
  • Entering a race distance written as 6f 110y or 6.5f as one number. Convert the yards part separately, and write a half furlong as the decimal 6.5.
  • Reading the 4-decimal result as measured precision. Course distances are rounded in practice and tracks are often not exactly the stated length.

About this calculator

A furlong is a traditional English unit of length equal to exactly 201.168 meters (1/8 of a mile, or 220 yards, or 40 rods) — a measure with roots in medieval English agriculture, where it represented the length of a plowed furrow. It has survived into modern use almost exclusively through horse racing, where race distances in the United States and United Kingdom are still commonly quoted in furlongs.

This converter switches length between furlongs and meters in either direction using the exact 201.168 m conversion factor. Horse racing fans and handicappers use it to translate race distances (like a 6-furlong sprint) into metric terms for comparison with international races run in meters, and students of historical or imperial units use it out of general curiosity about legacy measurement systems.

Race cards often write distances such as 1m2f, meaning one mile plus two furlongs. Since a mile is 8 furlongs, that is 10 furlongs in total, so enter 10 and read 2011.68 m, converting the whole distance rather than each part separately. For the opposite direction, a 1000 m sprint is about 4.9710 furlongs, just under 5. Which race distances, or other old units, would you like to see converted?
