Decimal Hours Converter
Turn HH:MM into decimal hours for timesheets.

How it is calculated
Decimal hours express a duration as a single number of hours, with the minutes turned into a fraction of an hour: decimal = hours + minutes / 60. There are 60 minutes in an hour, so 30 minutes is 0.5, 15 minutes is 0.25 and 45 minutes is 0.75. The tool adds your whole hours to the minutes divided by 60 and rounds the result to two decimals, so 20 minutes (0.3333…) shows as 0.33. If you leave one of the two fields empty, it is treated as zero; if both are empty, nothing is shown. Minutes above 59 are accepted and simply carried over, so 1 hour 90 minutes gives 2.50. The result is useful in timesheets, payroll and invoices, where hours are multiplied by a pay rate.
Worked example
An employee works 7 hours and 45 minutes. The minutes are converted first: 45 / 60 = 0.75. Adding the whole hours gives 7 + 0.75 = 7.75, so the tool returns 7.75 decimal hours. At a rate of 20 per hour, the pay for that shift is 7.75 × 20 = 155. If you had typed 7.45 as hours and minutes, the result would have been wrong, since 7.45 hours is really 7 hours and 27 minutes.
Common mistakes
- Reading 7:45 as 7.45. The part after the dot in decimal hours is a fraction of 60 minutes, so 45 minutes is .75, not .45.
- Rounding too early. 20 minutes is 0.3333…, and rounding it to 0.3 before multiplying by a rate leads to a small but real pay error.
- Typing the minutes into the hours field, which makes the result 60 times too large.
- Forgetting that the tool does not subtract breaks. Convert the working time, not the clock-in to clock-out time, if you want unpaid breaks left out.
About this calculator
This converter turns clock-format time (HH:MM, like 7 hours 30 minutes) into decimal hours (7.5) by dividing the minutes portion by 60. It's the exact conversion payroll systems expect, since minutes don't divide evenly into a base-10 number without this step — 45 minutes becomes 0.75, not 0.45.
Freelancers and contractors billing by the hour, HR staff processing timesheets, and payroll software that requires decimal input all rely on this conversion to avoid under- or over-paying someone by a few cents per timesheet line. The tool converts in this direction only; to turn a decimal figure like 3.25 hours back into 3 hours 15 minutes for a schedule, multiply the decimal part by 60 (0.25 × 60 = 15).

This matters most on timesheets: 7 h 45 min is 7.75 h, which you can multiply by an hourly rate. Because each result is rounded to two decimals, 20 minutes shows as 0.33, and three such entries add up to 0.99 instead of 1. For a long list, total the hours and minutes first, then convert the sum once. How does your employer or client expect time to be rounded, to the quarter hour or to the minute?
