Carpet Cost Calculator
Find how much carpeting a room costs.

How it is calculated
The tool treats the room as a rectangle: Area = length × width and Cost = Area × price per m². Length and width are in metres, the area is shown in square metres (m²) with two decimals, and the price is the amount per square metre. The cost is shown with a dollar sign, which is only a display symbol: if you enter a price in another currency, read the figure in that currency. Length and width must be above zero and the price cannot be negative. Only the exact floor area is used. The tool adds nothing for waste, offcuts, pattern matching, underlay, gripper rods or fitting, and it does not handle L-shaped rooms, so add those yourself or split the room into rectangles and add the results.
Worked example
A room is 4.5 m long and 3.2 m wide, and the carpet costs 350 per m². Area = 4.5 × 3.2 = 14.40 m². Cost = 14.40 × 350 = $5,040.00. If the shop sells carpet only in 4 m wide rolls, you would pay for the whole roll length that you actually cut, which is more than the 14.40 m² the tool counts.
Common mistakes
- Entering dimensions in feet or centimetres. The fields expect metres, so 450 for a 4.5 m wall would give an area 10,000 times too large.
- Assuming waste is included. The result is for the bare floor area, so buy extra (often a tenth or so, depending on the shop and the pattern) or ask the supplier how much is needed.
- Entering a price per roll, per running metre or per square foot. The price field is per square metre.
- Forgetting extra costs such as underlay, fitting, removal of old flooring and threshold strips, which are not in the figure.
- Measuring from the walls at skirting height without checking for alcoves, bay windows or built-in cupboards that change the shape.
About this calculator
This calculator multiplies a room's length by its width to get the floor area and multiplies by the price per square meter (or square foot) to estimate the total material cost of carpeting a room.
Homeowners planning a renovation, contractors quoting flooring jobs, and interior designers preparing a budget all use it to move from raw room dimensions to a real cost figure before buying material. The cost covers the net floor area only. Because carpet is sold in fixed-width rolls, add a waste allowance yourself, typically 10–15%, for the offcuts that are unavoidable when a room does not divide evenly into roll widths or a pattern has to be matched.

Treat the total as a floor, not a quote. Carpet comes on rolls of fixed width, so a room that is 3.2 m wide can still use a 4 m roll and you pay for the leftover strip. Stairs, closets and doorway thresholds also need their own pieces. Measure the widest points of an uneven room and sketch where seams will fall. What does your supplier charge for, the area or the roll length?
