Thermochemical Calorie to Joule Converter
Enter a value and pick a direction to convert thermochemical calories and joules.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses the exact definition 1 thermochemical calorie = 4.184 joules. Calories to joules: J = cal × 4.184. Joules to calories: cal = J ÷ 4.184. The direction setting decides which way it goes, and results are rounded to two decimals. Besides the converted value it shows the rate (1 J is about 0.24 cal, shown rounded) and a check line that converts the answer back to the starting unit. The unit here is the small calorie, cal. It is not the kilocalorie (kcal, also written Calorie with a capital C) used for food energy, which is 1,000 times larger. Negative values are accepted and keep their sign.
Worked example
Convert 1,000 J to thermochemical calories. Divide by the factor: 1,000 ÷ 4.184 = 239.01 cal. The check line converts back: 239.0057 × 4.184 = 1,000.00 J. Because the tool shows rounded 239.01 but checks with the unrounded value, the check returns exactly 1,000.00 J. In kilocalories this is only 0.239 kcal.
Common mistakes
- Treating cal as the food Calorie. A 250 kcal snack is 250,000 cal, and typing 250 here gives 1,046 J, not the 1,046 kJ you probably need.
- Using 4.18 or 4.2 from memory. The tool uses 4.184 exactly, so a hand calculation with 4.2 differs by about 0.4 percent.
- Leaving the direction on calories to joules when the value is in joules. The result is then about 4.184 times too large instead of 4.184 times too small.
- Mixing this calorie with the International Table calorie (4.1868 J) or the 15 °C calorie. They differ in the third decimal, so use the same definition as your source.
- Reading 1 J = 0.24 cal as exact. It is rounded for display, and the exact factor is 1 ÷ 4.184.
About this calculator
The word “calorie” is actually ambiguous — the thermochemical calorie (cal_th) is one of several historical definitions of the unit, fixed by exact convention at 1 cal_th = 4.184 joules, distinct from the slightly different “15°C calorie” and the International Table calorie once used in engineering. It originated as the energy needed to raise one gram of water by one degree Celsius, but is now defined directly in terms of the joule, the SI unit of energy, rather than measured experimentally.
This converter switches between thermochemical calories and joules in either direction using that exact 4.184 factor. It's relevant in chemistry and thermodynamics, where reaction energies are still often reported or found in older references in calories, and unit consistency matters when combining that data with SI-based calculations that use joules throughout.

Older chemistry tables often list reaction energies in kilocalories per mole, while modern references use kilojoules. This tool works in small calories, so enter a kilocalorie figure multiplied by 1000: 1000 cal comes out as 4,184.00 J, which is 4.184 kJ. Divide by the amount of substance separately, because the converter knows nothing about moles. Do you often need kcal or kJ per mole directly as extra output options?
