Brick Calculator
Find how many bricks you need.
Result
How it is calculated
You enter the wall area in m² and the brick length and height in cm. The tool converts the brick face to m², face = (length ÷ 100) × (height ÷ 100), then works out bricks = area ÷ face × 1.1 and rounds up to the next whole brick. The 1.1 is a fixed 10 percent allowance for cuts and breakages. The brick face is the exact size you type; the tool adds nothing for mortar joints, so enter the brick size including its joint if you want the joints counted. It also gives one skin of bricks laid flat on their face, and does not work out thickness, mortar or openings. Brick sizes differ by country, and the area must not be negative.
Worked example
A wall of 12 m² built with bricks of 21.5 cm by 6.5 cm. Face area: 0.215 × 0.065 = 0.013975 m². Bricks before waste: 12 ÷ 0.013975 = 858.7. Adding 10 percent gives 858.7 × 1.1 = 944.5, and rounding up gives the tool's result of 945 bricks. If you enter the sizes with a 1 cm joint added, 22.5 by 7.5, the same wall needs 783, because each brick covers more of the wall.
Common mistakes
- Entering the brick size in millimetres or metres. The fields are centimetres, so 215 would be read as 215 cm.
- Entering the wall width or height instead of the area. The tool wants one area in m², so multiply width by height first.
- Forgetting to subtract windows and doors. The area you enter is all that is counted, so openings left in raise the quantity.
- Using the bare brick size when the joints matter. Without the joint the result is higher, here 945 against 783 with a 1 cm joint included.
- Treating the result as the count for a thicker wall. The tool counts one brick layer; a wall two bricks thick needs roughly twice as many.
About this calculator
This calculator estimates how many bricks a wall needs from its total wall area (m²) and the brick's face length and height (cm), then adds a standard 10% waste allowance for cuts and breakages. No mortar joint is added, so include it in the brick size if you want it counted.
Builders, bricklayers, and DIYers use it before ordering materials for a garden wall, extension, or feature wall, so they can buy the right quantity in one trip instead of running short mid-project or over-ordering.

Round the result up to whole pallets or packs from your supplier, and order everything in one go. Bricks from different production batches can differ slightly in colour, and a later delivery may not blend into the wall. The count is for one skin of bricks laid flat on their face, so a wall two bricks thick needs the quantity doubled by hand. Which standard brick sizes in your country would you like us to list as examples?
